Biohazards include blood, body fluids, types of body tissue, animal and human waste, pathological waste, microbiological waste, and sharps waste that are contaminated with infectious substances. A biohazard is, in essence, a type of waste that can cause harm to the environment, animals, and humans. The most common biohazards include:

• Blood

• Human waste

• Animal waste

• Saliva

• Vomitus

• Animal carcasses

• Human body fluid (vaginal secretions, semen, amniotic fluid, pleural fluid, etc.)

• Sputum

• Nasal secretions

• Microbiological waste

• Human tissue

• Items contaminated with a biohazard material

Biohazard Cleanup Services We Offer:

Various body fluids are often found at the scene of an accident or in cars, ambulances, and hospitals. It is crucial to clean these up as soon as possible to avoid infecting others. For example, Hepatitis B can live in dried blood for up to seven days. The only way to stop the transmission of these types of microorganisms is to clean them up with solvents that are strong enough to eliminate them.

Animal and Human Waste - Steri-Clean® Rhode Island

Animal and human waste is both pungent and unpleasant, and it can pollute the environment, the groundwater, and be dangerous to both humans and animals. It may contain bacterial infections like cholera, dysentery, and salmonella. Viral infections can also be passed on from waste, with the two most common infections being norovirus and rotavirus.

Pathological/Microbiological/Sharps Waste

Pathological waste refers to any material that is infected with pathogens, such as animal bedding or anything that contains blood or body fluids, such as blood vials. Microbiological waste is mostly found in hospitals; it includes substances such as cultures and specimens. Sharps are used needles that can still have living pathogens on them. If handled or touched, sharps can pose a real health risk to humans.

Tips for Managing Biohazard Exposure

You should always avoid handling any hazardous materials if you do not have the necessary training. However, if for some reason, you do need to handle a biohazard material or have touched it by accident, be sure to follow these safety tips:

• Always wear gloves and other protective gear if possible

• Keep sharps (needles, syringes, etc.) in leak-proof, hard containers

• If you come into contact with a substance wash your hands thoroughly with disinfectant soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

• When you are finished handling the biohazard material, dispose of your safety equipment by placing it in a plastic bag and sealing it.

At Steri-Clean® Rhode Island, we only use the latest EPA approved standards and practices to clean biohazards. We understand the necessity to clean them immediately, making sure the contaminated area is safe, with all potential hazards being disposed of properly.
